Thomson embraces cleaner energy

Green Generators Thomson has become the first major holiday company on the UK high street to power their entire nationwide retail estate with green energy.

Stateline Wind Facility (Walla Walla County, WA; Umatilla County, OR) Summerview Wind Facility (Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada) Tillamook Animal Waste to Energy (Tillamook, OR) Washington State School for the Blind (Vancouver, WA) Hanford (White Bluffs, WA) The above facilities replace our energy consumption by supplying the power grid with our equivalent energy requirements of 100% green energy from wind and solar energy providers.

Solar Panel Thomson, the UKs largest holiday company, has contracted Scottish Southern Energy- a major supplier of green energy (energy generated from renewable sources) - to power over 750 holiday shops across the country.

Cleaner Air Solutions provide solar panels, solar PV panels, wind turbine generators, or a combination hybrid system, ie solar PV linked to a wind turbine. eco2solar Solar water heating systems, save money and do your bit for the environment with solar energy that costs less than you think. eco2solar for your home, swimming pool or business. 3KW

Epa Greenpower The Thomson shops electricity will be generated by wind farms and other renewable sources such as hydro and solar power.

Scottish Power H20 power is clean, effective and harnesses the power of nature to provide energy for you. And with ScottishPower’s new Green Energy H2O option, we match the amount of electricity you use with a supply of clean, power into the electricity grid. “The significance of Scotland's hydro resource is often forgotten and we welcome Scottish Power's Green Energy H20 tariff and the opportunity that this presents for consumers to choose to source their energy from a renewable tariff” (Friends of the Earth Scotland)

Wind Energy The new contract with Scottish Southern Energy means Thomson will receive almost 18GWh (gigawatt hours) of green energy a year, which equates to more than 60% of the total electricity consumed across Thomson and Thomsonfly operations around the UK.

Solar Power Since the early 70's I have been a follower of the development of 'alternatives' to petroleum based energy. Wind, solar, stream these days with hydrogen based energy making exceptional advances these last several years. While many of us have been acutely aware of the need to develop 'new' energy technologies, people in the mainstream are becoming more accepting of the fact that we must find other energy sources to replace petroleum.

Solar The decision to change electricity suppliers to a greener source came in response to Thomsons annual Green Idea questionnaire which generated feedback from employees across Thomsons high street, overseas and airline business.

What environmentalists propose is the reduction of the need for foreign oil through the development of renewable energy sources. A cursory survey of the Internet confirms this. On its Web site the Sierra Club ( www.sierraclub.org) encourages the use of "clean, renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal and clean biomass" as a means of "increasing energy security by diversifying energy sources."

Nuclear Power Other ideas generated, which Thomson and Thomsonfly will be trying this year, include separating and recycling waste on selected flights, auditing hotels on the impact they have on their local environment and encouraging closer co-operation with universities that run tourism courses such as sustainable tourism modules.

Greenpower Inc Peter Rothwell, managing director for Thomson said Changes like this can make a huge difference on the impact we have on the environment. Were always looking for opportunities to be greener and are committed to strengthening the position of our business on all aspects of environmental impact and sustainable development. If greater efficiency of operations, fuel consumption and business practices benefits the environment, our customers and employees, then it is a win-win situation.

Solar Electricity Scottish Southern Energys national account manager Peter Cannings said: Were delighted to welcome Thomson to the growing number of companies willing to show their green credentials. This is a great opportunity for us to bring green electricity into a forward thinking organization.

Power Greene Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is one of the largest power companies in the UK, serving over six and a half million customers across England, Scotland and Wales. SSE own and operate around 40 per cent of the total renewable generation capacity available.
