Mix Of Technologies Seen Generating Future Power

Green Generators Power plants of the future, meant to produce cleaner energy, likely will combine two or more alternative energy technologies to make electricity more efficiently, a Rutgers University engineer believes.

At the same time, energy such as heat wasted by one system could be used by the other, said Dr. Mike Muller, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Rutgers.

Despite Britain enjoying 40% of Europe's wind energy; it is way behind Denmark, which generates 18% of its total electricity from wind. Epa Greenpower Muller told about 20 policymakers, government workers and reporters at a briefing on fuel technology on Tuesday that a variety of energy systems, mostly small in scale compared with today's typical power plant, will be used for different energy needs. Smaller-scale systems will enable facilities such as a campus or even a large building to replace part of its energy supply with a hybrid system.

Solar Electricity Another longstanding problem is that electricity production remains inefficient, with much of the fuel used to produce electricity wasted.

Power Greene The efficiency level for power distributed over an electric grid rose from 5 percent in 1900 to 32 percent in the 1960s, with no improvement since. Some hybrid systems might eventually reach 70 percent efficiency, Mueller said.

Green Electric Along with solar and wind power systems, technologies being studied include fuel cells, power derived from waves and undersea currents, burning of wood waste and waste gases from landfills, and even "clean coal" systems that remove the worst pollutants before the coal is burned.

Am Greenpower Among the hybrid systems already in use are one combining solar cells, propane and a battery system to run an Arizona marina, and one in tiny Wales, Alaska, that uses wind turbines backed up by a diesel engine.

Renewable Electricity "If everyone ... starts covering 5 percent of their building with aggregate systems like this, we will make a dent" in future needs for cleaner energy, Muller said.

Green Company Muller focused on energy systems for stationary uses, such as supplying businesses and homes. But he noted that President Bush's call last month for $1.2 billion in new research spending on hydrogen-powered fuel cells for cars should accelerate development. Fuel cells combine hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity.

Led Greenpower One roadblock is finding a way to store large amounts of hydrogen in a lightweight form at normal temperatures and pressures, something not possible yet. Researchers at Rutgers and elsewhere are working on one possibility, carbon "nanotubes," or microscopic, whisker-shaped carbon structures that keep hydrogen molecules attached.

Alternative Energy "Many of us will be riding in a hydrogen-fueled car before long," Muller predicted.
